The Metaverse is a virtual world of interconnected infinite communities. The Metaverse is a combination of several technological elements such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and video. In the Metaverse world, people can meet and even interact just like in the real world. The virtual environment created in the Metaverse is predicted to bring about major changes in the world. This will have an impact on the education system, government, and even the world of tourism can be affected if later this Metaverse has developed.
Friday morning (30/09) the Informatics Study Program (Prodi) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held an inaugural lecture with the topic of introducing the Metaverse to new students of the Informatics Study Program class of 2022. This activity provides an overview of the elements that make up and how Metaverse was developed. The material presented included gamification, animation, games, and blockchain technology. The inaugural lecture of the Informatics Study Program in 2022 was entitled “Immersive Technology with Metaverse”.
Present as the first speaker Rahmat Adhani from IOTA with material on gamification. The second speaker Chandra T. Fahmi from Tokocrypto delivered material related to blockchain technology. The third material about animation was delivered by Andri Viyono from One Animation. The last speaker Ilham Hasymi Effendi provided material related to game technology. Interestingly, 3 of the 4 presenters are UMM informatics alumni. Andri Viyono is a 2009 class alumni while Chandra and Ilham are 2010 class alumni. Presenting presenters who are competent in their fields, of course, can satisfy the enthusiasm of new students.
The close relationship between Metaverse and animation, illustration, and game engines is quite complicated to learn. To create a metaverse world, a Metaverse developer must have these three skills. “Metaverse uses the unity application for its development which is based on the c# programming language,” said Nuril, an Informatics Student who is a Metaverse developer at the Informatics Study Program at the Muhammadiyah University of Malang who was also present at the Metaverse demo in the guest lecture activity.
Together with the development of this metaverse, the UMM Informatics Study Program will become one of the study programs that equip students with Metaverse developer competencies in Indonesia and even in the world as stated by Hardianto Wibowo, Secretary of Informatics Study Program as well as PIC of Metaverse School. “We designed the Metaverse School to create a reliable Metaverse Developer. We hope that in the future Muhammadiyah University of Malang will be known as a University with immersive technology, Metaverse University,” said Hardianto Wibowo.
